What is leaky gut?
Leaky gut occurs when there is damage to the intestinal wall. Irritation and inflammation can cause an increase in gut permeability. As a result improperly digested food is allowed to pass through into the blood stream. This may result in activation of the immune system and the development of an allergy to the offending food.

• Multiple food sensitivities

How to begin healing:
Beginning with improving digestion is a good way to start the healing process. To ensure proteins are digested properly you must maintain a low stomach pH as protein begins digestion here. To do this you should:
• Relax while eating.
• Chew thoroughly.
• Eliminate allergens and irritating foods.
• Correct nutrient deficiencies.
• Consider enzyme supplements or bitters to improve acid levels.
• Eat a healthy diet of whole foods and exercise regularly.
The next step would be to promote healing of the intestinal lining:
• Increase zinc and vitamin A foods which assist in healing.
• Supplement with glutamine, glucosamine, slippery elm and/or aloe which soothe and heal mucous membranes.
• As well as removing foods which cause allergic symptoms, also eliminate gut irritants such as coffee, tea, chocolate, tomatoes, potatoes and sugar.
Lastly you will need to re-populate your intestinal flora:
• Consume probiotic foods if you can tolerate them, eg sauerkraut, yogurt etc.
• Supplement with a good probiotic if fermented foods cause problems.
• Consume whole foods high in fibre to feed the new population, this is important. If you do not feed the bacteria they will not survive.
• Drink plenty of water.
